The
Sciences of the Artificial by
Herbert Alexander Simon
"People sometimes ask me what they should
read to find out about artificial intelligence. Herbert Simon's
book The Sciences of the Artificial is always on the list I give
them. Every page issues a challenge to conventional thinking,
and the layman who digests it well will certainly understand
what the field of artificial intelligence hopes to accomplish. I
recommend it in the same spirit that I recommend Freud to people
who ask about psychoanalysis, or Piaget to those who ask about
child psychology: If you want to learn about a subject, start by
reading its founding fathers." -- George A. Miller, Complex
Information Processing
Continuing his exploration of the organization
of complexity and the science of design, this new edition of
Herbert Simon's classic work on artificial intelligence adds a
chapter that sorts out the current themes and tools -- chaos,
adaptive systems, genetic algorithms -- for analyzing complexity
and complex systems. There are updates throughout the book as
well. These take into account important advances in cognitive
psychology and the science of design while confirming and
extending the book's basic thesis: that a physical symbol system
has the necessary and sufficient means for intelligent action.
The chapter "Economic Reality" has also been revised
to reflect a change in emphasis in Simon's thinking about the
respective roles of organizations and markets in economic
systems.
Herbert A. Simon is Richard King Mellon
University Professor of Computer Science and Psychology,
Carnegie Mellon University, and 1978 Nobel Laureate in
Economics.

Excerpt:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the area of computer science focusing
on creating machines that can engage on behaviors that humans consider
intelligent. The ability to create intelligent machines has intrigued
humans since ancient times, and today with the advent of the computer
and 50 years of research into AI programming techniques, the dream of
smart machines is becoming a reality. Researchers are creating systems
which can mimic human thought, understand speech, beat the best human chess player,
and countless other feats never before possible. Find out how the
military is applying AI logic to its hi-tech systems, and how in the
near future Artificial Intelligence may impact our lives.

Refereed journal disseminates research, news and info about all aspects of AI. With past and present editions available online.
JAIR (ISSN 1076-9757) covers all areas of artificial intelligence
(AI), publishing refereed research articles, survey articles, and
technical notes. Established in 1993 as one of the first electronic
scientific journals, JAIR is indexed by INSPEC,
Science
Citation Index, and MathSciNet.
JAIR reviews papers within approximately two months of submission and
publishes accepted articles on the internet immediately upon receiving
the final versions. JAIR articles are published for free distribution on
the internet by the AI
Access Foundation, and for purchase
in bound volumes by Morgan Kaufmann
Publishers.
